It’s an amazing thing to behold when big things take place in small communities. That is exactly what took place when Doddridge County residents David Mitchel and his brother-in-law Dan Daquilante set out to find a way to help those in the surrounding area meet specific needs.

After discovering the nation-wide not-for-profit organization “Sleep in Heavenly Peace” (SHP), both Mitchel and Daquilante decided it was a good fit for the children in Doddridge County and the surrounding area and set out to become a legal and local Chapter of the nationally known institution in 2019.

The simple, yet powerful mission of SHP, “All children deserve a safe and comfortable place to lay their heads” deeply resonated with Mitchel and motivated him to move forward helping families in various circumstances in the very community where he resides. Mitchel stated, “I have come to realize how family dynamics have shifted and I recognize as a society, we have more grandparents unexpectedly raising their grandchildren, families raising children as part of Foster Care, devastated families having lost all their possessions due to fires…all these scenarios have positioned families to be in need of a bed for their children, and unfortunately, the costs that goes with that is not always available for some households. This is where we come in.”

Because of their desire to meet the challenges of children needing a bed, both Mitchel and Daquilante acquired a location to not only store supplies, but an area to work in and build bed frames. The storeroom/work area allows the space to be ready at a moment’s notice when that call is received from someone needing assistance. Mitchel stated that they provide the bed frame that they assemble in the home, a mattress, and bedding for each child in need.

When asked about the requirements for families qualifying for a free bed, Mitchel stated that one can go online to shpbeds.org and fill out the “Apply for a bed” section. He also added that a child must meet the requirements of being between the age of three years old to seventeen years old. Mitchel also stated that if WiFi is not available or if assistance is needed in filling out the form, he would be glad to help.

When asked about the expense that is involved with providing a bed; mattress; and bedding for a child, Mitchel stated that they rely on donations made by individuals, businesses, churches, and occasional grants. He also added that donations of funds or materials allows them to bless and help others and declared they are hopeful that what they do resonates with the community to help out either by monetarily giving or volunteering of time and talents.

Additionally, Mitchel voiced his gratefulness of position and resources that allowed them to help families and as of the end of 2024, he rejoices that 150 beds were built, assembled, delivered, and set-up for children in Doddridge County, Ritchie County, the Salem area, and also a delivery was made to a child in need as far away as Charleston. Mitchel conveyed his appreciation to everyone who helped and blessed the families in need and stated that we all need a little help from time-to-time.

Mitchel also added that if anyone would like more information, has any questions, would like to volunteer, or help in any way, he can be reached at 304-873-1654.
